Lycanthropy Interview
The Werewolf Myth
My first post is going to cover a myth that most people are familiar with in today's society. It starts with a man and ends with a beast. Yes, I'm going to discuss Lycanthropy. The real myth is a curse. We've all heard about werewolves changing when the moon is full, but did you know that witchcraft and the Lycaeonia curse were also factors? That curse turns you into a werewolf just because you harmed someone. Presently, people believe lycanthropes were reincarnated into human form, but in their previous life, they were a wolf. The myth of werewolves came from trying to find amusing stories to entertain, however, these legends were soon being reported as real and chaos began. In France, between 1520 and 1630, thirty thousand "werewolves" underwent investigations and torture. This isn't Twilight where shirtless teenage boys run around just turning to wolves on a whim. Here's some proof that this is definitely a curse and not a nice little love tale.
Gilles Garnier, the hermit of Dole
"In 1573, werewolf attacks became more apparent. After finding several half-eaten children, the authorities of the town Dole in Frenche-Comte province put a price on werewolves heads. Two months after the injunction, an alleged werewolf named Gillas Garner was arrested. His victims were nine to twelve-year-old children. He slaughtered them with his paws and teeth. To satisfy his appetite, he ate flesh from their thigh, legs and belly. The stories of his crimes and sentencing him to death still survive and have become a folk song."
Imagine if Jacob had done that to Bella...it'd be a short series. Now, come the scientific facts of lycanthropy. It is believed to be a psychiatric problem, in most cases, induced by drug abuse. No "real" werewolves have been found, it's mostly in people's heads. Sadly, our culture encourages this behavior by making it seem cool and trendy. No teenage girl wanted to be a werewolf until Taylor Lautner took his shirt off. The only good thing about it is that it's genetic, so no little girl will let any random guy with abs who "imprinted" on her bite her neck...can't say the same thing about vampires...
